Leh: Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor also joined campaigning for awarding Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour to Tibetan spiritual leader the His Holiness Dalai Lama.
“I am delighted to support this campaign for the Dalai Lama to be given Bharat Ratna,” Tharoor said in a video message.
“I have the great pleasure to meeting this His holiness Dalai Lama half dozen times over the last 40 years. Starting with accounting in Geneva, when I was working for UN in 1980,” he said.
“His Holiness Dalai Lama came there to address and it was great honour to speak to him. “He held my hand; I was touched with eminence of the Knowledge and I felt deeply humbled,” MP said.
‘Subsequently, I met him few other time mainly in Delhi and I have to say I was touched by his extraordinary spiritual wisdom, his compassion and jolly sense of humour,” he said.
He further said that he strongly endorsed the campaign to award him Bharat Ratna.
It is pertinent to mention here that His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, was conferred the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, “for advocating peaceful solutions based upon tolerance and mutual respect in order to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of his people.
“For years now, his followers have wondered if the Dalai Lama, who established the independent Tibetan government in exile in Dharamshala, will also be formally acknowledged with a Bharat Ratna for his exceptional service.
Earlier, prominent personalities including Aman Bansal, Swathy Anand, Abbas Ali and other people also endorse Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour to Nobel Laureate and Tibetan spiritual leader the His Holiness Dalai Lama.
