
Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon makes it to Guinness Book of World Record
Leh: The history has been made, this time from the Union Territory of Ladakh as first Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon was Monday officially registered in the Guinness Book of World Record.
The UT of Ladakh hosted first Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon wherein upto 75 athletes participate from across the country as well as foreign countries.
Meanwhile, CEC Leh congratulated everyone for making it to the world record. Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon is now officially registered in the Guinness Book of World Record, he said, in presence of DC Leh.
“Congratulations we have made it to the world record. Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon is now officially registered in the Guinness Book of World Record. An Event inspired from PM @narendramodi Vibrant Border Village Programme,” CEC Leh wrote on his social media Twitter handle.
He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Army, ITBP, BRO, LMGA along with the PRI members, youth associations and villagers from the surrounding villages of Pangong, such as Phobrang, Lukung, Spangmik, Maan, Merak, and entire Durbuk sub-division in making the event a grand success.
Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in collaboration with LAHDC Leh organised India’s first and world’s highest frozen lake marathon on Frozen Pangong Lake.
The first of its kind, marathon was an attempt to make the Guinness World Record for the world’s highest frozen lake marathon, and now the event has made it.
Meanwhile DC Leh Shrikant Susus said India’s first frozen lake half marathon was successfully held at Pangong Tso today.
“Event was recorded as “ Highest Altitude Frozen Lake half marathon” in Guinness World Records,” DC Susu wrote on his Twitter handle.
He added that the Pangong Marathon was also initiated to share the ecologically sensitive concerns of Ladakh to a larger audience through the medium of sports.
He also hoped that the issues and concerns of the border villages of the district will be alleviated and it will develop holistically.
Further, DC Leh appreciated and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of all the stakeholders involved in successfully organising the Pangong Marathon.
India’s first frozen Lake Marathon is being held at a height of 13,862 feet. The starting point of the 21km marathon was at Lukung which will culminate at Maan village after four days run on the frozen water of Pangong Tso.
Among the 75 participants, 50 are from outside Ladakh UT, including four international athletes. Several local athletes have represented the region at marathons in other cities are also participating in the history making marathon.
Ladakh hosts World’s highest, India’s first Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon
The marathon was called the Last Run to highlight the issue of climate change. Indian Army and ITBP were roped in for implementation for the event.
The theme of the marathon was “The last Run: a leap towards saving our glaciers”. It certainly is the next-level marathon ever at such an altitude.
Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh and LAHDC Leh made all the arrangements for the safe and smooth conduct of the marathon.
The Department of Information and Public Relations Leh asserted that the Marathon was Organized as a part of VibrantVillage Program, it aims to promote sustainable winter tourism in border villages to accelerate development pace.
Besides aiming to promote sustainable winter tourism in border villages of eastern Ladakh and boosting livelihood opportunities for border residents.
The frozen lake marathon saw overwhelming participation from athletes across the world.
