Kargil: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur, visited Barsoo block on the second day of his visit to Kargil.

Chairman, LAHDC Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan; Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Santosh Sukhdeve and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kargil, Anayat Ali Chaudhary, accompanied LG Mathur during the tour.

LG Mathur visited the 8.5 metre-high statue of Chamba (Maitreya Buddha) at Karchey Khar.

He also visited the tomb of Rgyal Khatoon, a queen from Baltistan. Historian Mohd Sadiq briefed about the history of the statue and shared the efforts being made for the preservation of the statue and the tomb.

L G Mathur stressed on the need for a protective wall for the statue and for full use of its potential as a tourist destination.

A number of delegations called on LG Mathur during his visit to Barsoo block. Chairperson, Block Development Council (BDC), Barsoo, Hajira Banoo; Sarpanch, Barsoo, Zulikha Banoo; Councillor, Barsoo, Sheikh Ghulam Mohd Ansary raised several issues related to the development of the block, including installation of telecommunication/mobile towers in Tickat Khandi panchayat halqa; upgradation of existing Government High School at Tickat to Higher Secondary School; construction of motorable bridge/link road at Gong Thila; black-topping of link road at Thila Broq and from Taikat to Shispore; construction of link road from Thila Broq to Titik Goo glacier and from Khandi to Churon Khandi; sanctioning of lift-irrigation systems and construction of dzings (reservoirs) for irrigational purposes; intervention in declaring Barsoo block as naibat; promotion of tourism activities in Barsoo block; construction of Itchoo-Rangdum Road and from Lastaq to Sapi via Rusi La for connectivity; sanctioning of Community Health Centre (CHC) for Barsoo; creation of Barsoo as a revenue village; sanctioning of protection bund at Patoo Yarchoks; the need for remodelling of irrigational canal at Tima Tabchay; macadamisation of link road from Parkichey to Yaldiks; geological examination of Gorge Nallah Patoo through experts; sanctioning of a Medical Aid Centre for Barsoo; construction of bridge at Singroung; construction of an reservoir at Ldumburchey Purkichey; construction of khuls at Yoqyur Khul Purkichey; sanctioning of a Medical Aid Centre at Mohalla Lastaq, etc.

Another delegation comprising Sarpanch, Khandi, Mohd Ali; Nambdardar, Bartoo, Mohd Hussain; Sarpanch Bartoo, Mohd Ibrahim; Panch, Kharchey Khar, Haneef Beigh; Sarpanch, Karchey Khar, Mohd Hussain; ex-Servicemen of Barsoo block led by its Vice-President, Mohd Haider; State Media Secretary, Bhartiya Janta Yuva Morcha, Zakir Ali Zakiri raised several issues related to the development of the villages in Barsoo block, viz. preservation and renovation of statue of Maitreya Buddha, Rgyal Khatoon’s tomb, Karchey Khar (Palace) under special package to develop the area as a tourist destination; sanctioning of homestay scheme for Karchey Khar; creation of a separate block for Barsoo; sanctioning of district status for Sankoo sub-division; installation of mobile towers to improve telecommunication connectivity; opening of Sankoo-Rangdum Road via Barsoo; organising awareness camps on central government schemes; construction of sports complex at Barsoo; creation of a platform to shift Pangbar village; construction of link road from Sapi to Yarkashing; maintaining status quo of Karchey Khar village under Sankoo instead of CD block Barsoo; restoration of Ranthak Chuka irrigation canal in Staikburik Karchey Khar; construction of link road between Thangboo and Skinkarchay; sanctioning a Govt Higher Secondary School at Bartoo; construction of link road from Pangbar to Sapi and from Itchoo to Rangdum; establishment of Yak Breeding Farm and Livestock Development Centre with adequate staff; creation of post of block inspector in Khandi, etc.
