Traffic halted briefly, more snowfall predicted till Thursday
LEH: Ladakh on Tuesday received scattered snowfall across places—season’s first, signalling the onset of the harsh winter season, while halting the traffic movement on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) Road for a brief period of time.
Light to moderate snowfall has been predicted over the next two days, even as the authorities have urged the commuters to exercise caution.
People in Ladakh woke up to a fresh coat of snow on Tuesday morning, with the snow accumulated to upto 3 cm at some places. Many of them took to social media to share photographs of the fresh snow.
“Magical moments unfold as Ladakh embraces a pristine coat of fresh snow at MIMC. The pure white landscape transforms the institute into a winter wonderland, setting the stage for adventure and breathtaking views,” wrote Ven Bhikkhu Sanghasena, the Founder of Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, Leh.
“Leh valley of Ladakh received season first snowfall, expecting more snowfall in coming days to restore the glaciers and snow peaks of mountains,” wrote Nawang Jorgyas on X.
Light snowfall occurred at scattered places across Ladakh on Tuesday, said the weather report and predicted ‘light to moderate snowfall’ at many places of the union territory for next two days.
Light to moderate snowfall very likely at many places on November 29th and 30th, with main activity on 30th November, it said.
Traffic was suspended on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road early Tuesday morning due to snow accumulation.
“Zojila road has been blocked as 2 -3 inches of snow has accumulated beyond Gumri on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road. However, GREF Men and Machinery are on the job to remove the snow,” said an official in the morning.
However, the traffic was allowed to move hours later after the snow was removed from Zojila Pass.
“After temporary closure, traffic movement at Zojila Pass has been restored. However, commuters are cautioned about slippery road conditions. Authorities advise minimizing brake usage and avoiding travel after 4:00 pm to ensure safety during the challenging weather,” said Kargil Police.
