
Kisan Morcha, LBA delegations from Durbuk, Nyoma call on LG BD Mishra
Leh: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) met a delegation from Kisan Morcha led by its State General Secretary, Sonam Norboo, at Raj Niwas.
Norboo congratulated Brig (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) on assuming the charge of the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and informed about vegetables supplied by them to the Indian Army from June till October.
He also informed about vegetables supplied to the Indian Army by external companies due to which they are not able to sell the vegetables at a proper rate.
Norboo requested the LG if they are the only agency selected to supply vegetables to the Indian Army from June to October, and also requested to arrange exposure tours for farmers from Ladakh to raise awareness among them on different types of vegetables that can be grown in a high-altitude region like Ladakh and also to build their capacities to increase the production of vegetables.
He further requested to fill the vacant post of Director of the Agriculture Department and also to extend all agriculture-related centre-government schemes in Ladakh.
The LG inquired about their ability to provide adequate vegetable supply to the Army and also about their storage capacity and reserves, and also inquired if the farmers from Ladakh would be able to increase their vegetable production after the exposure visit. He assured to provide all possible assistance to them.
A delegation comprising members of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Durbuk and Nyoma led by their presidents, Dorjey Stanzin and P Sonam, respectively, met the LG at Raj Niwas.
Dorjey informed about their livelihood means, particularly by herding Pashmina goats, sheep and yaks and their dependence on the pastoral economy, and also informed about the dependence of their livelihood on the sale of Pashmina wool. He further informed about the unique geography, topography and distinct culture of the people of Changthang.
Dorjey requested for a separate district status for the Changthang area which consists of two sub-divisions- Durbuk and Nyoma.
The LG assured to look into the matter and informed that a Board of Officers comprising representatives from Hill Council Leh and Kargil along with representatives from the sub-divisions will be formed to check the administrative feasibility and financial implications.
