LEH: As many as 1433 cases are pending in the lower judiciary in the union territory of Ladakh, while the number in the neighbouring union territory of Jammu and Kashmir is over 2.90 lakh, the parliament was informed on Thursday.
The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has a total pendency of 44753, the Minister Of State (Independent Charge) Of the Ministry of Law And Justice; the Minister of State in the Ministry Of Parliamentary Affairs; and the Minister Of State in the Ministry Of Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal said in the Rajya Sabha, while replying to a query.
As far the district courts are concerned, as many as 1433 cases are pending in the lower judiciary in the union territory of Ladakh, he said.
Of these, 694 are pending in Kargil district, while 739 are pending before the court in Leh district, he added.
The minister said that there are 290098 pending cases in District Courts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Among the 290098 pending cases in District Courts, 24650 are in Anantnag, 6339 in Bandipora, 21224 in Baramulla, 13522 in Budgam, 6775 in Doda, 4754 in Ganderbal, 64505 in Jammu, 11869 in Kathua, 3584 in Kisthwar, 7964 in Kulgam, 13240 in Kupwara, 6277 in Poonch, 11884 in Pulwama, 10338 in Rajouri, the minister informed.
He further said that 5539 are in Ramban, 5431 in Reasi, 7105 in Samba, 6750 in Shopian, 47069 in Srinagar and 11279 in Udhampur.
The number of cases pending in the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh stand at 44753, the minister said.
It was further informed that 1823 fresh cases were instituted in the district courts of Ladakh in the year 2023, while as 1724 cases were disposed of in the same period of time.
Further, 114 cases have been registered between in the year 2024 till February 2, in the UT of Ladakh, while 32 cases have been disposed of in this period.
Similarly, 212162 cases were registered in District Courts of Jammu and Kashmir last year, while 192602 cases was disposed of in 2023. In this year, so far, 11695 cases were registered in District Courts of Jammu and Kashmir, while 13256 cases were disposed of, the minister informed.
The Minister further informed that High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh registered 4099 cases in 2023, but was able to dispose of 14329 cases last year, from 1st January 2023 to 31st December 2023.
In the year 2024, till 2nd February, the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh registered 117 new cases and disposed of 251 cases, the minister informed.
The minister replied that in Jammu and Kashmir number of functioning court rooms with Video Conference (VC) mode are 218, out of which 86 were already provided with the same. While 186 courts are yet to be equipped with Video Conference mode and there are over Video Conference Cabins in Jammu and Kashmir.
The minister in another query replied that there are over 9 eSewa Kendras in District Courts in Jammu and Kashmir.
Under eCourts Mission Mode Project Phase II, eSewa Kendras have been established in High Courts and District Courts across the country. These centers are located in the court complexes and have been established to bridge the digital divide and extend assistance to lawyers and litigants.
These Kendras aim to serve as a one-stop centre offering free of cost information on court cases/ orders/ judgments, facilitation of court related matters, and e-filing services, particularly benefiting those who may lack access to technology or reside in remote areas.
The minister in a reply to another question on implementation of the e-Court Mission Mode Project said that there are over 218 operational eCourts in High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Further, High Courts in Jammu and Kashmir have utilized all the funds released to them. An amount of Rs 18.98 Cr funds were released for High Courts of Jammu and Kashmir, the minister replied.
