Leh: Keen followers of social media were taken by surprise Wednesday morning when the official twitter handle of the German Embassy in India shared an iconic photograph of the majestic Leh city.
The German Embassy write an exciting text which has a lot for Ladakh to come in near future -clean energy, abundant electricity and economic prosperity.
The German Embassy tweet said: “What’s new after India-German Inter-Governmental Consultations? Carbon-free Ladakh. Germany supports India on the way to a completely carbon-free Ladakh and with Leh-Haryana transmission line. More Green Energy for all! Germany is India’s strong partner for a sustainable future.”
In background to this tweet is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with the German Chancellor.
During the bilateral meeting, India and Germany agreed on a number of partnerships. Developing clean energy in Leh and its transmission is a potential Indo-German project which the German side has now confirmed.
The project envisages not only evacuation of energy to Haryana but also strengthening internal supply system within Ladakh. The Rs 27,000 Crore project will also have opportunities of huge economic prosperity for Ladakh.
It may be mentioned here that the Power Ministry in January this year cleared the proposal to lay power transmission link for evacuating renewable energy from Ladakh as part of the green energy corridor. Now this is emerging as potential India-Germany partnership project. The proposal allows for setting up of a 5 gigawatt (GW ) transmission link from Pang (Leh) to Kaithal (Haryana). The project, which also includes 12 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS), is to be completed in five years. The estimated project cost is around ₹27,000 crore. State-run transmission giant Power Grid is the implementing agency for the project. The scheme is under the regulated tariff mechanism (RTM). The proposal was cleared by the National Committee on Transmission (NCT) on January 3, 2022. The project will provide 76 per cent utilisation of transmission capacity and will help evacuate 13 GW of RE generation (9 GWp of solar and 4 GW of wind). Out of 12 GWh battery energy storage, about 1-2 GWh will be developed as part of transmission element to keep the line charged during the period of no generation, while the remaining battery energy storage would be developed as part of generation element. Besides the transmission corridor and battery storage systems, Power Grid will strengthen the AC system in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir to provide RE power within Ladakh as well as to Jammu & Kashmir.
