LEH: With the astonishing development in Sill Development Sector of Ladakh union territory, 15 Skill Centres have been established across the UT in four different colleges enrolling a total of 689 students in its first batch.
Since National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has a prime focus on Skill development among students in colleges, the administration has been working on the key application as around 10 different skill courses including Designing, Pickle Making, Yoga Instructor, Beauty Therapist among other programs were launched and students have been showing keen interest in the short term skill courses.
“We in collaboration with Sector Skill Councils (SSCs) have established 15 Skill Centres in four Ladakh colleges and SSC has enrolled 689 college students in first batch,” Commissioner Secretary of S&TW/TE&SD, Ladakh Padma Angmo informed during a press briefing on Friday.
Angmo briefed on Skill Centres in Ladakh, exploring avenues in various sectors, and Social Development, besides shedding light on robust Pension Schemes for a secure future.
Under NEP, Angmo said all the students enrolled in each of these courses will be awarded 3 credit points which will be included in his/her degree. “We expect maximum students from every semester to apply for skill courses to earn these credit points. They also will be awarded a Certificate after completion of the course which will be recognized across the country,” Angmo mentioned.
Apart from usual course for college students, She said that Government Degree College Kargil has started same Short Term Training Course of Three Months for non-students registering more than 47 students including 27 in Graphics Designing and 26 in Home Embroidery. These courses will be beneficial to these students for employment and self-employment.
Regarding the Scholarship and Pension Schemes in Ladakh, Angmo said currently under National Social Assistance Program (NSAP) GoI and state level Integrated Social Security Scheme (ISSS) about 19 thousand beneficiaries are covered.
She said that approximately 10,000 students have applied for government scholarships, and the deadline has been extended till January 31st by the Ministry to encourage more applications.
Under NSAP; Angmo informed 8,000 individuals benefit from the scheme covering old age, widows and persons with disabilities. Under ISSS, 10,000 people, including women in distress, persons with disabilities or those in need, are registered.
Additionally, 900 more applications have been cleared this year including 450 from Leh and 400 from Kargil district of the UT, with a commitment to consider more applications in the upcoming year.
