Applauds artisans for preserving local tradition
Leh: The First Lady of Ladakh, Neelam Mishra, paid a visit to the ‘Looms of Ladakh’ Showroom and the Women Empowerment Centre at Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army Wednesday.
Looms of Ladakh is a women’s cooperative group that specialises in producing luxury garments using Ladakhi Pashmina along with sheep and camel wool.
During her visit, the First Lady was given a tour of the showroom by the Director of Looms of Ladakh, Abhilasha Bahuguna. Neelam Mishra interacted with the artisans who were working on the loin-loom and expressed her appreciation for their contribution to preserving Ladakh’s rich culture in terms of its textiles and unique tradition.
Neelam Mishra inquired of the different traditional crafts of Ladakh, their working techniques etc. and encouraged the artisans working on the loin-looms to try their hands on more varieties of products where Pashmina is blended with other sustainable fibers like cotton. She stressed the need for genuine tagging of the Pashmina percentage in the product to maintain transparency.
The First lady spoke of the importance of effective costing and marketing techniques to enhance the reach and demand of the products with a ‘Local to Global’ approach. She also checked the trial products made by the trainees at the center and suggested ways to reuse them by turning them into quilts using cotton or satin covers.
She lauded the hardwork of the artisans and stated that they are leading the women empowerment moment right from the grassroot level and also contributing towards preserving Ladakh’s unique culture and promoting sustainable fashion.
