Leh: The National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) in Leh conducted a School Health Programme at Leh Modern School, focusing on combating tobacco addiction among adolescents.

Led by NTCP psychologist Phunstok Diskit, the session aimed to educate adolescents on the health risks associated with tobacco use and equip them with practical strategies for prevention and cessation.

The comprehensive program included education, counseling, and practical interventions such as mobile counseling services and medical support.

During the session, Dr. Stanzin Jamyang, District Consultant NTCP, emphasized the importance of NTCP’s school program and highlighted the availability and proper usage of nicotine gum as a cessation aid.

He stressed the need for medical supervision, especially for heavily dependent individuals, and provided guidance on dosage and administration.

Furthermore, Dr. Jamyang underscored the importance of supporting pregnant and breastfeeding women in quitting tobacco use, recommending non-pharmacological approaches and cautioning against nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) use in certain patient groups.

Addressing withdrawal symptoms and alternatives to pharmacotherapy, Dr. Jamyang emphasized the role of support during the initial days of cessation and highlighted alternative strategies such as deep breathing and physical activity.
