LEH: A group of 114 Indian Forest Service (IFS) Probationers belonging to the 2024–26 IFS training course is currently on a study visit to the Union Territory of Ladakh as part of their Thematic Tour-II (Hill Tour). This important leg of their training, conducted by the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), is aimed at giving the young officers hands-on exposure to forest, wildlife and environment management in the Himalayan region.
The visit has been coordinated by the Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment, UT Ladakh, to give an on-field exposure to the unique ecological profile of Ladakh — including its cold desert landscapes, high-altitude vegetation, key wildlife habitats, as well as the ongoing efforts of the
Department in climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation.
On 01 Oct 2025, the Probationers had an interaction with Sh. Rajesh S., IFS Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF), UT Ladakh, and Senior Officers of the Department of Forest Ecology & Environment, UT Ladakh, at Leh. The APCCF shared valuable insights into forest and wildlife management practices specific to high altitudes and reflected the department’s ongoing initiatives in ecological restoration, community participation, human-wildlife conflict mitigation, and environmental sustainability in Ladakh.
During the tour, the officers will visit key project sites, engage in discussion with field staff, about the unique ecosystem, biodiversity, and forestry/ wildlife conservation and management practices in ladakh.
