A breathtaking wildlife moment from Ladakh has gone viral on social media after a red fox was spotted roaming near Pangong Tso, drawing admiration from thousands of viewers. However, what began as a serene encounter with Himalayan wildlife soon sparked an important conservation debate.
The video, shared on Instagram by Vibhor Srivastava, shows the red fox calmly walking along the roadside near Pangong, unfazed as vehicles pass by. The rare sighting against Ladakh’s stark and majestic landscape left viewers mesmerised.
Sharing the clip, Srivastava wrote, “When Ladakh surprises you with its wild beauty. Stopped by Pangong Tso and met this beautiful red fox — a moment I’ll never forget. Nature always knows how to leave you speechless.” The post quickly gained traction, with users praising the fox’s beauty and the tranquillity of the scene.
However, an Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer drew attention to a subtle but troubling aspect of the video, cautioning against what he termed “sympathy conservation.” He warned that growing familiarity of wild animals with roads and humans—often encouraged by feeding or excessive human presence—can pose serious risks to wildlife, including road accidents and behavioural changes.
The officer stressed that while such sightings are enchanting, maintaining distance and not interfering with wildlife is crucial to ensure their safety and preserve natural ecosystems.
The incident has reignited conversations around responsible tourism in fragile regions like Ladakh, underlining that true conservation lies not in emotional reactions, but in informed and respectful coexistence with nature.
