Leh: The Leh Apex Body has formally accepted the resignation of its Chairman, Thupstan Chhewang, bringing an end to his tenure marked by both leadership and recent internal differences within the group.
According to an official press release issued by the People’s Movement for 6th Schedule for Ladakh, the decision follows a series of differences of opinion between Chhewang and other members of the Apex Body.
These disagreements reportedly surfaced during key high-level meetings, including representations made before the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and the Union Home Minister.
The statement also noted that Chhewang had been unable to attend crucial meetings of the Apex Body since July 6, 2025, citing health and personal reasons.
Taking these factors into account, members held detailed deliberations and unanimously decided to accept and respect his resignation, which had been tendered on the same date.
Despite stepping down as Chairman, the Apex Body has urged Chhewang to continue as a primary member, acknowledging his longstanding contribution to Ladakh’s socio-political landscape and his role in advocating for constitutional safeguards, including the demand for Sixth Schedule status.
The Leh Apex Body comprises representatives from key religious, political, and civil society organizations in Ladakh, including the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Anjuman Imamia, Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam, Ladakh Gonpa Association, and other community groups.
Chhewang, a veteran leader and former Member of Parliament from Ladakh, has been a prominent face in the region’s political discourse, especially in matters related to autonomy and tribal rights.
The development comes at a crucial time when Ladakh’s civil society groups continue to push for constitutional protections and greater representation under the Sixth Schedule framework.
