Sports Against Drugs: Kargil Police Launches Civic Action Programme with Grand Archery Tournament
Kargil, June 6: In a major initiative aimed at promoting youth engagement, physical fitness and social awareness, District Police Kargil on Saturday launched a series of sporting activities under the Civic Action Programme, beginning with an Archery Tournament at the District Police Lines (DPL), Kargil.
The tournament, organised in collaboration with the Ladakh Archery Association, Kargil Wing, witnessed enthusiastic participation from archers across the district. A total of 12 teams, including nine men’s teams and three women’s teams, representing various sub-divisions and district-level clubs, are competing in the event.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by DySP Headquarters Anayatullah (JKPS), DySP Tundup Dorjay (KPS), SHO Kargil, representatives of the Ladakh Archery Association and other officials.
Speaking on the occasion, DySP Headquarters Anayatullah said the sports events are being organised under the guidance of the Director General of Police and SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav as part of a broader effort to engage youth in positive and constructive activities.
He said the Civic Action Programme will feature a wide range of sporting disciplines, including football, volleyball, badminton, taekwondo and other competitions in the coming weeks.
“The objective is to channel the energy of young people towards productive activities, promote physical and mental well-being, strengthen police-public relations and create awareness against drug abuse and other social evils,” he said.
Highlighting the significance of the opening event, Anayatullah noted that archery was chosen to launch the programme because of its deep cultural roots and popularity in Kargil.
Addressing participants, DySP Tundup Dorjay said Ladakh Police has consistently focused on youth empowerment through sports, awareness campaigns and recruitment-oriented programmes.
He said the department remains committed to providing platforms that encourage leadership, discipline and positive community participation among young people.
Dorjay further informed that besides sports competitions, the Civic Action Programme will also include educational and awareness activities such as quiz contests, debates and interactive programmes aimed at fostering knowledge and social responsibility among youth.
The tournament drew enthusiastic participation from players and spectators alike, reflecting the growing interest in sports as a tool for community engagement and youth development.
District Police Kargil expressed hope that the initiative would inspire more young people to participate in sports, adopt healthy lifestyles and contribute positively to society while strengthening the bond between the police and the community.
