Visits Upshi Pashmina Goat Farm, reviews facilities; says Administration committed to sustainable ecosystem for rearers and artisans

Leh, November 29: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, today reaffirmed the Union Territory’s commitment to promoting Ladakh’s world-renowned Pashmina on the global stage, calling it a “cultural treasure” that reflects the region’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.
The LG made the remarks during his visit to the Pashmina Goat Farm at Upshi, where he reviewed key initiatives aimed at strengthening the production of premium Ladakh Pashmina and supporting the livelihoods of high-altitude nomadic communities who rear the indigenous Changthangi goats.
District Sheep Husbandry Officer (DSHO) Dr. Tsewang Morup briefed the LG on the farm’s operations, including the current herd strength, winter fodder arrangements, predator protection measures against snow leopards and other wild animals, and ongoing interventions to maintain goat health and fibre quality during harsh winters.
Assessing breeding practices, fodder management and veterinary care, Shri Kavinder Gupta stressed that Ladakh Pashmina is far more than a commercial commodity. “Pashmina represents centuries of tradition, skill and cultural identity. Our Administration is fully committed to building a sustainable ecosystem that benefits both the rearers in remote high-altitude areas and the artisans who transform raw fibre into globally coveted luxury products,” he said.
The LG directed the department to strengthen scientific breeding, expand fodder banks, and ensure uninterrupted veterinary services during winter months. He also emphasised integrating traditional knowledge with modern technology, calling for GPS-based herd tracking, improved shearing techniques and research-driven breed enhancement to consistently maintain the globally recognised quality of Ladakh Pashmina.
Underscoring the need for stronger market access, he urged the department to focus on branding, certification and anti-counterfeit mechanisms to safeguard the authenticity of Ladakh Pashmina in international markets.
Appreciating the dedication of the farm staff working in challenging conditions, Shri Kavinder Gupta assured full administrative support to scale up Pashmina production while preserving Ladakh’s delicate mountain ecology. Strengthening the Pashmina economy, he said, is central to boosting the income of rearer families and establishing Ladakh as a global hub of natural fibre excellence.
