Kargil, October 3, 2025:
The Government Degree College Kargil, Sankoo Campus solemnly commemorated the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a series of events spanning two days, aimed at reflecting on the life, philosophy, and timeless relevance of the Father of the Nation.
On October 1, 2025, the Department of History organized a debate and discussion on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, under the guidance of Dr. Fayaz Hussain, Head of the Department, History Department. Dr. Hussain spoke on Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring ideals of non-violence, truth, and social harmony, emphasizing their relevance in addressing today’s social challenges and promoting peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Stanzin Yangdol elaborated on Gandhi’s pivotal role in the freedom struggle, his constructive programmes, and commitment to self-reliance and rural upliftment.
Students enthusiastically participated in the debate, that fostered a vibrant intellectual environment, encouraging critical thinking and democratic discourse.
Continuing the celebration, on October 3, 2025, the Department of Political Science hosted a commemorative programme to observe Gandhi Jayanti. Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Head of the Department, opened the event by discussing the significance of Gandhi Jayanti in the current socio-political context.
Prof. Saleem Ahmad, Nodal Officer, delivered the keynote address, highlighting Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to peace, harmony, and India’s independence through non-violent means. Dr. Mohd Sharif further reflected on Gandhi’s major works and their enduring relevance in modern society.
Notably, students played a key role in the observance. Ms. Leela Banoo (3rd Semester) spoke on the continued relevance of Gandhi’s principles, followed by Ms. Suraya Banoo (1st Semester) who reflected on the philosophy of non-violence and its importance today.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Mr. Ali Asgar (3rd Semester), expressing gratitude to the Principal, faculty members, and participants for their contributions to the success of the programme.
