Kargil, August 27, 2026: A delegation from Sodh Block, comprising Nambardars, Village Committee members and prominent residents, met Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon, on Wednesday and submitted a detailed representation seeking the creation of Sodh as a separate Sub-Division.
The delegation described the demand as a long-pending requirement, citing the region’s vast geographical spread, difficult terrain, remoteness and limited connectivity as major challenges in accessing administrative offices and essential government services.
According to the representation, Sodh Block comprises around 10 Panchayats, nearly 30 Mohallas and several villages, with an estimated population of about 18,000 people. The delegation pointed out that several habitations are located in far-flung areas, making access to government offices and public services particularly difficult for residents.
The members argued that granting Sodh separate Sub-Division status would bring the administration closer to the people and improve the delivery of essential services in areas including revenue, education, healthcare, development and social welfare.
The delegation also urged the CEC to take up the matter with the competent authorities of the UT Administration of Ladakh and pursue it at the appropriate level. It called for a comprehensive feasibility assessment and administrative survey based on factors such as population, geographical area, number of habitations, distance from existing administrative headquarters, road connectivity, terrain and available infrastructure.
Emphasising the need for balanced regional development, the delegation maintained that the demand was aimed at ensuring better administrative access, equitable development and more efficient public service delivery for people living in remote areas.
CEC Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon gave the delegation a patient hearing and assured its members that their concerns, particularly the demand for a separate Sub-Division, would be taken up with the higher authorities at the appropriate level. He also assured his support in pursuing the matter in the larger public interest.
The delegation expressed gratitude to the CEC for hearing their concerns and assuring them of taking up the demand with the concerned authorities. The members also conveyed their support for initiatives aimed at the overall development and welfare of Sodh Block.
