KARGIL, September 3: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena visited the historic Heritage Village of Hunderman near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kargil and reviewed ongoing efforts to develop it as a major border and heritage tourism destination.
During the visit, the LG emphasised the unique potential of Hunderman, citing its strategic location, rich history and distinctive heritage. He said the village should be made more accessible to visitors and positioned prominently on Ladakh’s tourism map.
Shri Saxena reviewed the ongoing “Exploring LOC and Hunderman Village Experience” project, which includes a LoC viewpoint, parking area, integrated amenity centre, information panels, walking promenade, landscaping, smart toilets, café, viewing facilities, safety lighting and CCTV, solar panels, flag and selfie points and EV charging facilities.
He directed officials to complete the ongoing development works by the end of October this year.
“Hunderman is not merely a border village; it is a living symbol of Ladakh’s history, heritage and resilience,” the LG said, stressing that the village should emerge as a unique border and heritage tourism destination while ensuring that tourism benefits local residents.
The LG also called for a community-centric approach to tourism development so that increased visitor activity creates livelihood opportunities for villagers without compromising Hunderman’s heritage and character.
During the visit, Saxena interacted with local residents and heard their grievances. He also reviewed the solar lift irrigation system, aimed at improving water availability for agriculture through renewable energy.
The development of Hunderman is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting self-sustainability and inclusive development in remote border areas.
Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon; Member of Parliament Ladakh, Shri Mohmad Haneefa Jan; the local Councillor; and senior officials of the Tourism Department and local administration were present.
