Leh: In a spirited display of sportsmanship and community strength, the Phobrang Youth for Social and Environmental Care hosted the first-ever Annual Volleyball Tournament at Dhata Phobrang, drawing wide participation from across the region.
Nine teams — including seven boys’ teams and two girls’ teams — competed in the event that brought together athletes, villagers, and supporters for a lively celebration of teamwork and local pride.
The tournament culminated in two thrilling finals. In the women’s category, Six Sisters clinched victory against a determined squad from High School Yourgo. The men’s title went to Team Tsogtsallu, who overcame a strong challenge from Ibex.
Councillor Konchok Stanzin, who attended the event alongside a senior Indian Army officer and other local figures, praised the youth for their dynamic involvement in both sports and community initiatives. Addressing the gathering, he emphasised the role of youth-led events in building discipline, healthy lifestyles, and social cohesion in border villages like Phobrang.
He also highlighted upcoming infrastructure projects, including an Indoor Stadium, Futsal Ground, and Polo Stadium, aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure across Chushul constituency. Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to establishing Women Craft Centres in every village to boost rural livelihoods.
The youth organisation’s president thanked the Indian Army and the local leadership for their continued support. The success of the tournament, he said, was a testament to what community collaboration and youth engagement can achieve in remote and resilient regions like Phobrang.
