Leh: Ladakh has witnessed a significant rise in tourist arrivals, with the number of visitors more than doubling from 2.79 lakh in 2019 to over 5.31 lakh in 2022, following its designation as a Union Territory.
The figures were shared in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, who highlighted the positive impact of improved road connectivity and infrastructure in boosting Ladakh’s tourism sector.
According to the minister, 5.25 lakh tourists visited Ladakh in 2023, while 2024 has already seen 3.76 lakh arrivals by mid-year—despite seasonal travel variations.
Rai credited schemes like PMGSY, CRIF, and UT-led projects for opening up remote areas, reducing travel time, and making Ladakh a year-round destination for travelers.
The construction of new roads, helipads, and better snow-clearance systems has made it easier for tourists to explore the region even during winter months.
“The development of road networks and support infrastructure has promoted adventure and winter tourism while creating opportunities for local businesses and homestays,” he said.
Local tourism stakeholders confirm the trend, with many reporting an increase in bookings, longer stays, and a rising interest in cultural, spiritual, and eco-tourism experiences.
With tourism emerging as a pillar of Ladakh’s economy, further efforts are expected to focus on sustainable and responsible tourism development.
