Stobgais from Charasa raises issues about development of Nubra valley

LEH : Executive Director, Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC), N. Sreedhar and Joint Director, HEPC, Sundar Murugesan called on the  Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur, at Raj Niwas today. Commissioner/Secretary, Industries & Commerce, Saugat Biswas also attended the meeting.

N Sreedhar briefed LG Mathur about the one-day seminar on ‘Export Enhancement and Awareness’ organised by them in collaboration with the Department of Industries and Commerce, UT Ladakh for entrepreneurs and self-help groups (SHGs) of Ladakh.

He also suggested extending help to local entrepreneurs and SHGs in grooming and enhancing their capacity to become direct exporters, establishing a textile park and Skill Development Center in Ladakh, organising a buyer-seller meet (BSM) in Ladakh, setting up a help centre for Ladakh and registering entrepreneurs and SHGs on HEPC’s e-portal for exporting their products, etc.

LG Mathur directed that the Industries and Commerce Department may organise BSM in collaboration with HEPC and to ensure the introduction of the Yarn Supply Scheme (YSS) by National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) Ltd so that the beneficiaries can avail of the benefit of the subsidy component of the scheme. He also stressed on the need to set up a wool testing lab in Ladakh. He emphasised on the registration of entrepreneurs and SHGs on Government e-Market (GeM) as MSME units as well as for the import export code (IEC) so that the products could be exported to foreign countries and the need for handholding in this regard.

LG Mathur further directed the Industries and Commerce Department to request Development Commissioner Handlooms to set up a Weavers’ Service Center and Development Commissioner Handicrafts for a Skill Training Center in Ladakh.

LG Mathur suggested that HEPC may assist the SHGs in Ladakh in the direct marketing and exporting of their products so that they are not dependent on intermediaries. He suggested that HEPC may look at non-conventional marketing strategies that could be easily adopted by the SHGs as pashmina and wool products are not produced in bulk in Ladakh.

Jigmet Stobgais from Charasa village in Nubra valley also called on LG Mathur to raise issues regarding the development of Charasa village and Nubra valley, viz. constructing a bridge over Siachen River, setting up an Agricultural University in Ladakh, constructing barricades/walls to protect damage caused to cultivable land by Siachen River, constructing a motorable bridge at Udmaru and motorable road from Shaktse-Taknak to Hundiri, installation of ATM facility in Panamik block, construction of a multi-purpose stadium at Charasa, putting Charasa on the tourist map, completion of the Kuri-Charasa irrigation canal project, etc.
