Leh: Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Friday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Old Age Home (Zimskhang) at Saboothang, marking a significant step towards strengthening social welfare infrastructure for senior citizens in Ladakh.

Spread across 1,925 square metres and constructed at a cost of ₹19.74 crore, the facility has been designed to accommodate around 50–55 elderly residents. Equipped with 12 rooms, four dormitories, medical and office spaces, a dining-cum-kitchen area, TV room, and accessibility features for differently-abled individuals, the home aims to provide a safe and comfortable living environment.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between the UT Administration and the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre for the management and operation of the facility, signalling a collaborative approach to elderly care.

Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor described the inauguration as more than just the opening of a building, calling it a reflection of society’s values and collective responsibility towards its elderly population. He emphasised that Ladakh’s cultural ethos has always upheld deep respect for senior citizens, who serve as custodians of traditions and guiding forces for future generations.

Highlighting key directions, Saxena stressed the need to move beyond providing mere shelter and instead ensure dignity, emotional support, and a sense of belonging for the elderly. He urged families and communities to actively engage with senior citizens, spend time with them, and make them feel valued.

The facility incorporates several green and energy-efficient features, including eco-friendly construction materials, adherence to Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) norms, natural light optimisation, and thermal insulation through earth-based structures. A geodesic dome designed to trap solar heat further enhances energy efficiency while also serving as a prayer and seating space.

The Lieutenant Governor noted that this is the first such initiative directly established by the UT Administration, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive development. He reiterated that efforts will continue to strengthen social security mechanisms and ensure that governance reaches every section of society, particularly senior citizens.

Acknowledging the role of organisations working in the field of elderly welfare, he appreciated contributions from institutions such as the Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre and others for their continued service to the community.
