Leh: With an objective to provide fresh vegetables to people Ladakh as well as livelihood to farmers, the scientists have discovered innovative idea of growing vegetables under polyhouses.
“Polyhouses is technique, which is used to maintain temperature required for growing vegetables. The technique will help farmers to grow vegetables in harsh winters, when night temperature plunges minus 30,” an official from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) told Indus Dispatch.
Technical officer Rahul Sharma said that they use polyhouse or plastic to grow vegetables.
“In winters night temperature recorded around minus 30, in this condition we use ployhouse or plastic to grow vegetables,” he said. He added that in summer season they have grown tomatoes, pumpkin and ladyfinger, which is not possible earlier.
“And when temperature goes below minus, we grow broccoli, cauliflower and chinese cabbage with the help of polyhouse,” he said.
Kinza Fatima, Technical Officer Weather Station Leh said that they advise farmers to cover vegetables with poly house.
“We mainly grow leafy vegetables here and we advise farmers according to weather conditions,” she said.
Muneeb-ul-Rehman said that availability of vegetables in winters is very less. “Now with the help of research to provide fresh vegetables to the people of Ladakh,” he said.
He added that they are trying according to the condition like setting up mud poly houses. “We also do black coating so the absorbed heat remain inside during winters and night temperature should be maintained,” he said.
