Leh, Nov 20: Cooperative leaders and officials from across Ladakh came together in Leh to mark the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, reaffirming a collective push to strengthen the region’s cooperative movement. The meeting was chaired by Ms. Huma Khan (JKAS), District Registrar of Cooperatives, Leh, and attended by Assistant Registrars of Cooperatives Skarma Tashi, Nawang Tsering, and Tsering Morup, alongside a representative from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), signalling strong national-level support.
Representatives from key cooperative societies participated, including Looms of Ladakh Women Cooperative, TR Service Cooperative, Laga Multipurpose Cooperative, Handicraft Industrial Cooperative Society, Pomey Rangroks Yargyas Cooperative, Junuma Ama Handloom Cooperative, BDCS Leh, and Tar Thundel Tsogspa Cooperative.
The discussions focused on major challenges faced by cooperatives in Ladakh and the need for greater institutional support. Key issues included access to credit, market linkages, skill development, and effective utilisation of government schemes — particularly for women-led and artisan-based cooperatives.
DRC Huma Khan stressed the importance of transparency, accountability, and collaborative governance in strengthening cooperative institutions, adding that innovation and capacity building would be central to their long-term success. The NCDC representative briefed participants on upcoming schemes and funding avenues aligned with the International Year of Cooperatives 2025, encouraging societies to leverage national programmes for growth.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to revitalising Ladakh’s cooperative sector, with stakeholders agreeing to work collectively to ensure that cooperatives continue to serve as engines of local economic growth, women’s empowerment, and sustainable community development across the region.
