Kargil, November 24, 2025:
Kargil today observed Yom-e-Fateh, marking 77 years since the historic liberation of the region from Pakistani raiders in 1948. The commemorative event, held at Khree Sultan Cho Stadium, was jointly organised by the LAHDC Kargil, District Administration, and the Indian Army, drawing enthusiastic participation from veterans, students, and local residents.
The day honours 23 November 1948, when troops of the 77 Para Brigade marched into Kargil after successfully crushing the invading forces under Operation Bison, restoring the vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh. The occasion remains a potent reminder of national resilience, military bravery and the steadfast unity of the people of Kargil.
The commemoration began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kargil Helipad War Memorial, where Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon paid homage to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice.
At the stadium, the programme featured a march past by NCC cadets, students from leading schools, and the Ladakh Police. Cultural performances, including a Purgi dance and a National Integration dance, celebrated both the region’s heritage and India’s unity. A soulful Shina song, accompanied by the Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre Band, added a traditional touch.
The event also honoured Veer Naris, acknowledging their enduring strength and sacrifice. Winners of the Girls Badminton Championship and Inter-School Debate Competition were felicitated, while a weapons & equipment display offered civilians a glimpse of the Army’s modern capabilities. A medical and dental camp further extended services to local residents.
Reaffirming Kargil’s enduring strategic relevance, speakers emphasised the unwavering commitment of the Indian Army and local community to peace, progress, and national security.
The ceremony was attended by CEC Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, SSP Nitin Yadav, Brigadier Joshi of 121 Infantry Brigade, and senior civil and military officials.
