Leh: LAHDC Leh, in collaboration with EJM College, LBA Youth Wing, and the Cultural Academy, celebrated Bhoti Language Day on April 1, with a vibrant event aimed at preserving and promoting Ladakh’s linguistic and cultural heritage.
The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, scholars, and cultural enthusiasts, with Deputy Chairman LAHDC, Leh, Tsering Angchuk, as the chief guest.
Executive Councillor Stanzin Chosphel and Higher Education Secretary Bhanu Prabha also graced the occasion as guests of honor.
The gathering included Hon’ble Councillors, former MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, ADDC Leh, the Director of the Cultural Academy, the Director of EJM College, the Deputy Secretary of Culture, the President of the Language Committee, the President of the LBA Youth Wing, the President of the LBA Women’s Wing, the Vice President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, and the Principal of EJM College, Dr. Sameena Iqbal, among other dignitaries and students.
The celebration commenced with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, symbolizing wisdom and the preservation of the Bhoti language, followed by a soulful welcome song by Nurboo Zangpo.
The President of EJM College welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the vital role of Bhoti in safeguarding Ladakh’s cultural and historical identity.
CIBS Head of the Bhoti Department, Tsewang Yangjor, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the history and significance of Bhoti, highlighting its deep roots in Ladakh’s literary and spiritual traditions.
He also announced a new initiative to observe every Monday as “Traditional Day”, wherein students, faculty, and staff in educational institutions will wear traditional Ladakhi attire and maximize the use of the Bhoti language in communication and academic discussions.
This step aims to create a deeper connection with Ladakh’s cultural roots and encourage the younger generation to take pride in their heritage.
As a significant highlight of the event, LAHDC Leh,in a new initiative to recognize and encourage efforts in promoting the Bhoti language. Institutions, societies, and individuals who have contributed significantly to its preservation were felicitated and honored with mementos as a token of appreciation.
This initiative reflects LAHDC Leh’s commitment to strengthening Ladakh’s linguistic and cultural identity through collective efforts.
Students from EJM College, GDC Khaltse, and GDC Nubra participated in a stimulating quiz competition, showcasing their knowledge of Bhoti literature, history, and linguistics.
A panel discussion with Bhoti language experts further explored the challenges and opportunities in promoting the language across educational institutions and administrative spheres.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chairman LAHDC, Leh, Tsering Angchuk, congratulated everyone on Bhoti Language Day and stressed the importance of using one’s mother tongue in daily life.
He encouraged students to take pride in their linguistic heritage and actively contribute to its growth. He also called for structured initiatives to strengthen Bhoti language education and research, urging scholars and institutions to work toward its integration into mainstream academia.
The celebration concluded with a certificate and prize distribution ceremony, recognizing winners of various competitions. A mesmerizing dance performance by students from the Changthang region added to the event’s cultural grandeur.
LBA Youth Wing President Jigmet Rabstan delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts of all those who contributed to the success of the event.
The celebration reinforced a shared commitment to preserving and promoting the Bhoti language, inspiring students and scholars to continue their efforts in safeguarding this invaluable heritage.
