Leh, November 24: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, on Sunday conducted a detailed on-site inspection of the upcoming Eco-Smart New Terminal Building at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh, and reviewed the pace of work and integration of sustainability-driven technologies.

Expressing satisfaction over the “substantial and timely progress,” the LG commended the project team for deploying cutting-edge environment-friendly solutions, including a first-of-its-kind geothermal temperature-regulation system, extensive solar power integration, and eco-sensitive architectural design suited to Ladakh’s extreme climate. He said the terminal is poised to become “a model of sustainable infrastructure in high-altitude regions.”
Gupta underlined that the new terminal—designed to significantly boost passenger capacity and enhance air connectivity—will also act as a cultural gateway to Ladakh, featuring traditional Ladakhi motifs and architectural elements blended with world-class passenger amenities. “It will reflect Ladakh’s identity while offering global standards of comfort,” he said.
The LG stressed that the project aligns with Ladakh’s long-term goal of emerging as a carbon-neutral Union Territory, adding that the airport’s green features reaffirm the administration’s commitment to innovation, environmental responsibility, and robust public infrastructure.
During the inspection, Gupta reviewed major components including passenger facilities, safety systems, terminal interiors, and airside development. He urged officials to maintain momentum and ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timeline to accommodate the region’s growing travel demand.
Project Director A. Umashankar briefed the LG on advanced operational features such as aerobridges, automated processing systems, larger circulation zones, and expanded departure gates. He confirmed that the terminal is targeted for completion by April–May 2026.
Senior representatives from the Airports Authority of India, Shapoorji Pallonji Group, and Commissioner/Secretary Civil Aviation Dr. L. Franklin were also present during the inspection.
