Leh: A memorial event was held today at the Dorjey Motup Memorial Park, Housing Colony, Leh, to observe the 6th death anniversary of former Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, late Shri Dorjey Motup. The gathering paid rich tributes to his statesmanship, his contributions to Ladakh, and his enduring legacy in public life.
The event was graced by His Eminence Drubpon Khamtak Rinpoche; Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Tashi Namgyal Yakzee; Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Ghulam Mehdi; Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Stanzin Chosphel; Hon’ble Councillor Kungyam, Thinles Nurboo; Hon’ble Councillor Nyoma, Ishey Spalzang; Hon’ble Councillor Chushul, Konchok Stanzin; Hon’ble Councillor Sku-Markha, Sonam Nurboo; Hon’ble Councillor Panamik, Tsering Sangdup; Hon’ble Councillor Igoo, Sonam Thardos; Nominated Councillor, Mumtaz Hussain; Nominated Councillor, Ven. Konchok Tsepel; Former CEC Gyal P. Wangyal; BJP State Vice President, Dorjey Angchuk; BJP Mahila Morcha President, Rinchen Dolker; besides goba, family members of late Dorjey Motup, and a large gathering of well-wishers.
Hon’ble Councillor Kungyam, Thinles Nurboo, who anchored the event, extended gratitude to His Eminence Khamtak Rinpoche,Hon’ble Executive Councillors, Councillors and all the dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers for attending.
His Eminence Drubpon Khamtak Rinpoche, in his address, reflected on the life and legacy of late Dorjey Motup. He advised that the former CEC’s example should continue to guide public representatives and emphasised the importance of balancing service to the people with spiritual practice. He remembered Dorjey Motup as a religious-minded leader who always walked on the path of prayer and goodness, and stressed that leaders must work for the welfare of society with compassion while also nurturing faith and morality.
Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, spoke at length about the political journey and dedicated service of late Dorjey Motup. He recalled that as the former CEC, Dorjey Motup left behind a legacy of tireless work for development and progress. He highlighted that he played a pivotal role in strengthening governance in Leh and in bringing the administration closer to the people. EC Yakzee further shared personal experiences of working alongside him, stating that Dorjey Motup always encouraged teamwork, offered guidance, and never turned away anyone who sought his support. He said that the former CEC’s generosity of spirit and commitment to public service remain an inspiration for present and future representatives, and emphasised the need for such memorial events to remind the community of his vision and sacrifices.
Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Stanzin Chosphel, also paid heartfelt tributes and highlighted that the observance of Dorjey Motup’s death anniversary every year is not merely ceremonial but an important reminder of his values and achievements. He stressed the importance of further developing and upgrading the Dorjey Motup Memorial Park so that future generations may always remember his work. EC Chosphel added that the late CEC was not only a political leader but also a guiding elder, whose advice and approach to governance continue to serve as a model for those in public life.
Hon’ble Councillor Gyal P. Wangyal remembered late Dorjey Motup as a dedicated government servant turned political leader, who was compassionate, especially towards the underprivileged. He added that Dorjey Motup’s entry into politics was driven by his desire to serve the people, and his footsteps continue to inspire those who worked with him.
Hon’ble Councillor Nyoma, Ishey Spalzang, remembered Dorjey Motup’s selfless work in the Changthang region and said he was a guiding figure who always worked for the welfare of the poor and needy.
The Dorjey Motup Memorial Committee also announced plans for the upgradation of the Memorial Park in Leh to further preserve the memory of the former CEC and to honour his immense contributions to Ladakh.
