LEH: The School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Stakna, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, celebrated World Earth Day 2025 under the guidance of Prof Dorjay Namgyal, Associate Director, SAS&T, Leh.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr Deldan Namgail, Dr Kunzes Angmo, and Dr Anwar Hussain, along with other faculty members, B.Sc. Agriculture students, and trainees of the Basic Agriculture program.
The program commenced with an inaugural address by Dr. Kunzes Angmo, Assistant Professor, who introduced the significance of Earth Day and the reason it is observed globally.
She emphasized the importance of sustainable living, especially from an agricultural perspective, and spoke about the critical environmental challenges we face today-such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.
As part of the celebration, a quiz competition was organized with students divided into four teams-Team A, B, C, and D.
The quiz focused on themes such as sustainable agriculture, climate change, environmental conservation, and the ecological context of Ladakh. Team C emerged as the winner, demonstrating excellent knowledge and awareness.
Prof Dorjay Namgyal, in his address, highlighted the importance of tree plantation and environmental awareness among students. He urged the youth to become responsible stewards of the Earth and to spread awareness about global warming.
Prof. Namgyal also touched upon the emerging issue of climate refugees, citing the example of Kulum village in Ladakh, which is facing acute water scarcity due to changing climatic patterns.
He encouraged students to reduce plastic usage and brought attention to the harmful effects of microplastics on human health and ecosystems.
He emphasized the need to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, in line with this year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”.
Prof. Namgyal also motivated students to write articles and conduct research on issues like climate change, climate-induced displacement, and the impact of urbanization on fragile ecosystems like Ladakh.
The event concluded with a plantation drive on the campus premises, reinforcing the message of Earth conservation and collective responsibility toward the environment.
