The Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF), in collaboration with the Association of Baltis in Himalayan Ladakh and Territories of Indus (ABHLTI), organized the Second Confluence of Balti Culture in Kargil on Sunday, celebrating the vibrant heritage, language, and literature of the Balti community. The first edition of the event was held in Uttarakhand in 2023.

This year’s confluence, themed “Reflecting on the Balti Cultural Heritage: Challenges and New Directions,” brought together scholars, poets, and cultural practitioners from across the country.

The programme began with a welcome address by ABHLTI President Mohd Ali Ashour, followed by a keynote by Mohd Sadiq Hardasi, who traced the historical evolution of Balti culture. HCHF Founder Dr. Sonam Wangchok emphasized that the Balti Confluence series aims to unite Balti communities across India and abroad while promoting their shared linguistic and cultural identity. He announced plans to hold future editions of the confluence at national and international levels.

Scholars presented papers on diverse themes including Balti literature, community development, folk songs, and the archaeological heritage of Baltistan. Among the presenters were Dr. Ghulam Mehdi, Prof. Mohammad Hassan Hazrat, Prof. Sujat Khan, Asan Ali Danis, Wahida Reezwan, Adv. Gulzar, Ajaz Hussain Munshi, Dr. Mehdi Ali, and Mohammad Zameer.

A soulful Balti Mushaira added poetic flair to the event, with eminent poets Hadi Balti, Bashir Wafa, Akhone Asgar Ali Basharat, and Ali Asgar Rinchan reciting verses steeped in cultural pride and emotion.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Mohammad Jaffar Akhoon, Hon’ble CEC, LAHDC Kargil, lauded the efforts of HCHF and ABHLTI for preserving Balti and Purgi languages. He praised Dr. Wangchok and the participating scholars for their commitment to cultural preservation.

The event concluded with mesmerizing Balti folk songs by Sadiq Ali Ashoor, followed by a vote of thanks from Anayat Ali Shotopa, HCHF Kargil Convener. The programme was anchored by Sipte Hasan Kaleem.

The confluence reaffirmed the shared resolve of the Balti community to protect and promote their linguistic and cultural legacy across regions and generations.
