Zanskar, Feb 11: In a significant initiative to promote gender equality and scientific education, the ICDS Department Zanskar, in collaboration with the Education Department Zanskar, celebrated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science at Government High School Karsha.
The programme aimed to encourage women and girls to pursue education and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), while raising awareness about the importance of education in empowering young girls.
Gynecologist at CHC Padum, Dr. Tsetan, attended the event as the Chief Guest, while the Block Development Officer Karsha was the Guest of Honour. The Principal of Higher Secondary School Padum participated as Special Guest. The event also witnessed the presence of Zonal Education Officer Zanskar Tsewang Dorjay, CDPO Tashi Gurmath, Chairman SMDC GHS Karsha Tashi Tundup, Anganwadi workers, school staff, students and other dignitaries.
The programme began with a welcome address by Tenzin Dhakpa, teacher at Government High School Karsha, who highlighted the significance of the day and the role of education in strengthening women empowerment.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Tsetan stressed the importance of women’s health and adolescent awareness, highlighting the need for proper health education, balanced nutrition and timely medical consultation for adolescent girls.
Zonal Education Officer Tsewang Dorjay spoke about various government schemes being implemented in schools across Zanskar, focusing on academic development, health awareness and overall well-being of students.
The BDO Karsha elaborated on the Aspirational Block Programme and its objectives, highlighting developmental initiatives being undertaken in educational institutions and villages of the Karsha Block.
An interactive session was also organised during the event, where students actively engaged with the speakers by asking questions and sharing their views, making the programme informative and engaging.
The celebration was further enlivened by vibrant cultural performances presented by students, showcasing local traditions and talent.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by SMDC Chairman Tashi Tundup, who appreciated the participation of departments, teachers, students and organisers. The event reinforced the importance of empowering women and girls through education and science and motivated students to aspire towards careers in STEM fields.
