Zanskar, Dec 11 — Government Model Degree College (GMDC) Zanskar, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, Zanskar Kargil, observed World Mountain Day today with a strong emphasis on conserving mountain ecosystems and spreading awareness about the ecological challenges facing the region. The programme was held under the supervision of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal of GMDC Zanskar.
In his address, Dr. Abassi highlighted the vital role mountains play in sustaining life and maintaining ecological balance, particularly in regions like Zanskar where communities depend heavily on mountain resources.
A special PowerPoint presentation was delivered by Tourist Officer Rasool Lal, who spoke about the unique geological features of the Zanskar range, the region’s dependence on mountains, and the increasing pressure from climate change, tourism and human activity. He underscored the urgency of adopting sustainable practices to safeguard the region’s fragile ecosystem.
Dr. Jamphel Sheyan, Assistant Professor of English, stressed the need to conserve glaciers and protect the mountain environment by reducing carbon footprints and encouraging the use of organic products.
Students and faculty actively participated by sharing ideas on promoting conservation and sustainable utilisation of mountain resources. A documentary on the mountains and glaciers of Zanskar was screened, offering deeper insights into the region’s natural heritage and the pressing need for its preservation.
The event aimed to draw attention to environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, ecological imbalance, deforestation and unsustainable development—issues that threaten mountain regions globally and locally.
Participants appreciated the college’s continued efforts to foster environmental awareness. Many pledged to take responsible action to protect Zanskar’s fragile mountain ecosystem.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Vilayat Ali, Assistant Professor of History, acknowledging the contributions of all participants and organisers.
