
World Environment Day celebrated across Zanskar
EC Tashi attends WED program at KVK-II Zanskar; celebrations, plantation drive held at Abran Zanskar
ZANSKAR: World Environment Day was celebrated at KVK-II Zanskar where Executive Councillor, Tourism/RD and Zanskar Affairs, Er. Punchok Tashi was present as chief guest.
Dr FA Shah Khan Head of KVK Zanskar as well as hundreds of farmers from various villages of Zanskar took part in the event.
The Executive Councilor while addressing the gathering lauded the efforts of Dr Tej Partap, the former Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Kashmir for sanctioning the KVK in Zanskar.
He requested farmers to proactively play role in minimal use of hazardous fuel, plastic items and planting more and more tress as well as promotion of traditional organic farming.
The role of KVK Zanskar in making Zanskar self-sufficient in onion cultivation for the last decades was lauded. The farmers were requested to adopt the pattern of potato and green pea cultivation on the pattern of farmer of Lahul Spiti (HP).
Meanwhile, World Environment Day was also celebrated at Abran Zanskar under the theme ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. Councilor Cha Constituency, Stanzin Lakpa was present as chief guest and BDC Karsha, Lobzang Namgail was guest of honour.
All the officers of Subdivision, PRI members, students and staff of Hr. Secondary School Phey, Govt. Cluster School Skagyam and Govt. Middle School Abran and general public of Stod area of Zanskar participated in the program.
Plantation drives and events were held to raise awareness among the public regarding environment protection.
The program started with welcome speech of SDM Zanskar, Sonam Dorjay. While delivering the introductory speech, Dr Jamphel Sheyan Coordinator of the program highlighted importance of the WED and this year’s theme to the audience.
Stanzin Lakpa emphasized on conservation of environment and appreciated the efforts of the administration for celebrating the day at Abran village. Many students also presented their speeches during the function.
A plantation drive was also conducted during the WED celebration at Abran village, the chief guest and others dignitaries planted saplings during the event.
Nambardar of Abran village thanked all guests and officers of Sub Division Zanskar for gracing the occasion at the village. In the end, cultural programs were also presented by Ama Tsogpas and students.
