World Elder Abuse Day observed with a colourful event at Shey Old-age home

Leh: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was celebrated at HelpAge India, Old Age Home at Shey village. Chief Executive Councillor, Adv. Tashi Gyalson was the chief guest and District Social Welfare Officer, Leh, Nilza Angmo was the guest of honour.

In his address, CEC Tashi Gylason assured to extend all the possible help to HelpAge India from the administration/LAHDC. CEC emphasised on respecting elders and helping them. He said that it aims to encourage world to pay greater attention to the well-being and adequate healthcare of the elderly. Further, he added that it is an opportunity to create a national conversation around elder abuse prevention and what each of us can do to uphold and protect the rights of seniors in our communities. Also, he appreciated the efforts of HelpAge India and other organisations working for the betterment of society and promised to support every effort done by this organisation.
He released the National Report on Elderly prepared by HelpAge India.

Major findings of the National report were shared by Dr Abhishek Sharma, Program Manager.

A cultural performance was showcased by the students of Druk Padma Karpo School. Students also took part in a painting and slogan writing competition on the theme ‘Stop Elder Abuse’.

District Social Welfare Officer, Leh, Nilza Angmo spoke about respect, love and understanding towards elders and informed about the efforts being made by the Department of Social Welfare in coordination with Helpage Ladakh in the field of elder care.
