: The Forest, Ecology and Environment Department, UT Ladakh (Wildlife Protection Division Kargil and Forest Division Kargil) observed International Snow Leopard Day with a series of awareness activities aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and mitigating human-wildlife conflict across Kargil district.
: The Forest, Ecology and Environment Department, UT Ladakh (Wildlife Protection Division Kargil and Forest Division Kargil) observed International Snow Leopard Day with a series of awareness activities aimed at promoting wildlife conservation and mitigating human-wildlife conflict across Kargil district.The celebration commenced with a student rally organized from Government High School, Baroo to the Nature Interpretation Centre, Baroo. Students and officials actively participated, carrying placards and raising slogans to emphasize the importance of protecting the elusive Snow Leopard and safeguarding its fragile mountain ecosystem.
An awareness programme was also conducted at Sangrah, highlighting the ecological significance of the Snow Leopard, methods for mitigating human-wildlife conflict, and the crucial role of community participation in conservation initiatives.
To further engage the public, a public information stall was set up at Hussaini Park, Kargil, featuring detailed exhibits on the Snow Leopard’s biology, IUCN conservation status, habitat range, camera-trapping initiatives, and modern mitigation measures such as deterrent devices and the use of Anider systems.
Speaking on the occasion, officials reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to strengthening wildlife conservation efforts and fostering a spirit of coexistence between local communities and the region’s diverse wildlife.
The observance of International Snow Leopard Day reflects Ladakh’s ongoing dedication to preserving its high-altitude biodiversity and sustaining the delicate balance of its mountain ecosystems.
