LEH: As resentment grows within Ladakh on upcoming examination for the post of Assistant Registrar, open for candidates across India, the University of Ladakh on Tuesday said that it will conduct the examination as per the guidelines of University Grant Commission (UGC), under which it is governed.
Prof S K Mehta, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ladakh addressed a press conference on the varsity campus this evening, and said that the direct recruitment to two posts of Assistant Registrar, scheduled for December 17-18, are being conducted in accordance with the UGC guidelines and will not be postponed.
A number of students groups and political parties are demanding postponement of the said examination, demanding that Ladakh Resident Certificate (LRC) be made mandatory for the same, thus reserving both these posts for the people of Ladakh.
“The Universities are autonomous bodies, governed by the UGC. The UGC guidelines clearly state that the appointments under direct recruitment shall be made through an all-India, open test by conducting a written test and interview. The Ladakh reservation account for 45% reservation for ST category. And hence, one of the two posts is reserved for ST category, while the other post is being filled in open category, both on all-India level,” explained Mehta.
When asked about Jammu University making J&K domicile certificate mandatory for the similar posts, Mehta said he has no knowledge as to how University of Jammu can do that.
“I have no knowledge on this matter,” he said.

Asked about the demand of postponing the examination, Mehta says there is no reason for postponement.
“We could have done that if there was an immediate possibility of recruitment rules being changed. I don’t see any possibility of the examination being postponed,” he said.
