UoL celebrates IWD on theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’


LEH: The University of Ladakh celebrated International’s Women’s Day on the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ in its Leh Campus on March 8.

On the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Prof. S K Mehta was the chief guest and other distinguished speakers were also present.

The event commenced with the formal felicitation of speakers with mementos by the Vice Chancellor Prof. S. K. Mehta.

On the occasion various Guest speakers were present. While addressing the audience (First women army officer from UT Ladakh to secure a permanent commission in the Indian Army), Major Deachen Palmo talked at a length about good career avenue for women in Indian Army and the congenial working environment offered by Indian Army for women. She also shared her journey in the Army.

Later, Social worker, Women Cell Leh, Amir Sohail threw light on the growing gender-based violence. He also talked about the seriousness of the violence against women that has been on increasing trend in Ladakh.

Similarly, Law Officer Ladakh Police, Saira Parveen talked about the constitutional and legal provisions for safeguarding the rights of women. She also spread awareness among audience on how to report the various violence against women.

During the event, the members of women self-help group from Taru village were also present and one of their representatives shared her experience as a member of the self-help group and encouraged the students to follow the paths of women achievers.

Subsequently, certificates and prizes were distributed to the students who had participated in the drawing and speech competitions.

During the event, the female student achievers of University of Ladakh in various academic and co-curricular activities were also felicitated.

In the end, while delivering key-note address, VC Prof. S. K. Mehta expressed happiness on the growing strength of the female students in the University and appreciated the female achievers of the University.

Prof. S.K. Mehta also urged female students to avail various women-oriented schemes. The event culminated with formal vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Phuntsog Angmo.
