Padum, June 9: Government Degree College (GDC) Zanskar, in collaboration with ARTO Kargil and Police Department Zanskar, organised an awareness programme on traffic rules and road safety, highlighting the role of citizens in ensuring safer roads and better traffic management.
The programme was attended by students and faculty members of GDC Zanskar as well as students from Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Padum. SSP Zanskar Rigzin Sangdup was the chief guest, while ARTO Kargil Khadim Hussain attended as the guest of honour.
Welcoming the participants, Principal Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi stressed the importance of educating young people about traffic regulations, road safety and responsible citizenship to create a disciplined traffic environment.
Addressing the gathering, SSP Rigzin Sangdup said a valid driving licence and proper driving skills are essential for safe driving. He urged motorists, especially young drivers, to avoid rash driving, over-speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Highlighting the seriousness of road accidents, he said India records nearly 2.5 lakh road accident-related deaths annually, while Ladakh witnessed around 44 fatalities last year despite its sparse population. He stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and called upon citizens to strictly follow traffic norms and spread awareness within their communities.
Sangdup also underlined the need for improved traffic management, including proper parking facilities, and encouraged people to walk short distances whenever possible to reduce congestion, improve health and contribute to a cleaner environment.
Speaking on the occasion, ARTO Kargil Khadim Hussain said increasing development and rising traffic congestion have become major challenges affecting daily life. Comparing traffic systems with the flow of blood in the human body, he said smooth traffic movement is vital for the healthy functioning of any town.
He noted that while the number of local vehicle owners in Zanskar remains relatively low, the growing influx of tourists has increased pressure on the region’s traffic infrastructure. He warned that inadequate parking and poor traffic management could negatively impact visitor experience and hinder sustainable development.
Advocating sustainable transport solutions, Hussain called for greater use of electric vehicles, public transport and environmentally friendly modes of travel. He also highlighted cycling as a practical and eco-friendly means of transportation in many parts of Zanskar.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where students raised questions on traffic regulations, road safety challenges and traffic management, followed by a vote of thanks.
