Leh, May 16: In a major boost to adventure tourism in Ladakh, the Union Territory Administration on Friday signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Royal Enfield and the Ladakh Bike Co-operative to organise the annual “Ladakh Bike Week” as a flagship tourism event for the next three years.
The initiative comes under the vision and sustained push of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena to position Ladakh as a premier global destination for biking and adventure tourism.
Under the agreement, the week-long “Ladakh Bike Week” will be held every year from September 1 to September 7. The event is expected to draw thousands of bikers and adventure enthusiasts from across India and abroad under the theme “The Great Migration,” aimed at promoting national integration, cultural exchange and tourism in the Himalayan region.
Officials said the event will feature participation from leading national and international outdoor adventure brands, including The North Face, Patagonia and Garmin, which are expected to showcase adventure and biking innovations during the festival.
The administration has also emphasised sustainable tourism, with organisers committing to a zero-waste model for the event in view of Ladakh’s fragile ecological landscape.
The MoU follows demands raised by biking groups and the Bikers Union seeking inclusion of biking activities in Ladakh’s official tourism calendar. Responding to the proposal, the UT Administration facilitated the collaboration to institutionalise the event in an organised and community-driven manner.
Speaking on the occasion, L-G Saxena described the initiative as a significant step towards strengthening Ladakh’s biking culture and adventure tourism ecosystem while ensuring active participation of local communities.
He said the partnership reflects a shared vision of making Ladakh one of the world’s leading adventure tourism destinations while keeping the people of Ladakh at the centre of economic growth.
Highlighting Ladakh’s growing popularity among bikers, the Lieutenant Governor referred to iconic high-altitude passes such as Umling La, Khardung La and Chang La, which continue to attract riders and adventure seekers from around the world.
The administration said the annual event is also expected to generate livelihood opportunities for local stakeholders, including homestays, hotels, transport operators, mechanics, cafés, artisans, self-help groups and small businesses through increased tourist inflow.
The Lieutenant Governor further stressed the need for environmentally responsible tourism and called for preserving Ladakh’s unique ecology and cultural heritage while expanding tourism activities in the region.
