Kargil, June 24: A Parliamentary Committee of the Ministry of External Affairs, headed by Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor, arrived in Kargil on Wednesday as part of a study tour and paid homage to the brave soldiers at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass.
The delegation, comprising several Members of Parliament and senior officials, visited the iconic memorial and laid floral tributes in honour of the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil War. Army officials briefed the visiting members on key strategic locations and the historic significance of various battle sites associated with the conflict.
The committee was accorded a warm traditional welcome upon its arrival in Kargil. Member of Parliament from Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Nitin Yadav received the delegation at Hotel The Kargil. Cultural troupes representing different ethnic communities and Self Help Groups also participated in the reception, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Earlier, the delegation was welcomed at Zero Point in Drass by Deputy Commissioner Drass Imteeaz Kacho, Senior Superintendent of Police Ishtiyaq Kacho and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vishal Atri.
The visit forms part of the committee’s study tour aimed at understanding strategic, developmental and administrative aspects of the border region. The delegation includes MPs Arvind Ganpat Sawant, Praniti Sushil, Arun Govil and Shangreiso Zimik, along with senior officials and experts associated with the committee.
The visit to the Kargil War Memorial served as a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of the nation’s armed forces and highlighted the strategic importance of the region.
