If there is one place you should visit this summer (and every summer), it should be Ladakh. More of an annual pilgrimage, Ladakh has so much to soak in that even months are less to explore this high-altitude Himalayan region. If you are planning a trip to Ladakh and scouring for its most beautiful attractions, here’s our guide to the must-visits.

Also, please note that Ladakh is an ecologically sensitive region and you must stick the basic travellers’ hygine – do not litter, minimise plastic usage, travel sustainably, do not make the locals uncomfortable in any way and practice social distancing

Tsemo Castle

The castle itself is charming, but the panoramic views from the top are even more impressive than those seen from the Leh Palace. This is an ancient structure, built by King Tashi Namgyal in the 15th century, a little further up from Leh palace. The top of the cliff where Tsemo Castle is reached after a 20-minute trek on a dusty zigzag path.

Nubra Valley

The Nubra Valley is a tri-armed valley to the northeast of Ladakh. Traveling from Leh over the Khardung La pass is the most common way to reach this valley. According to local scholars, its original name was Ldumra (the Valley of Flowers). Our word, the breathtaking views of Ladakh should not be obstructed by anything, such as windows, and thus the most popular mode of transportation to Ladakh is a motorcycle road trip!

Leh Palace

The magnificent Leh Palace is one of the most spectacular tourist attractions in Leh. This palace, which overlooks the town of Leh, was built by King Sengge. The palace’s night view is also quite lovely, though you won’t be able to enter after sunset. One of Leh’s most popular tourist destinations, this is from where you can see the Stok Kangri mountain range in Zanskar to the south and the Ladakh mountain range to the north from here.

Magnetic Hill

Magnetic Hill is a popular place to visit on your Ladakh road trip. The locals believe that the hills have magnetic properties and that the pull will propel any vehicle uphill even if the engine is turned off. There is also a lot of local folklore that describes the entire phenomenon as supernatural. To discover the mystery of Magnetic Hill, travel 35 km on the Srinagar-Leh Highway en route to Leh.

Taglang La Mountain Pass

This high paved mountain pass, also known as Tanglang La, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ladakh for bikers. Taglang La Pass is claimed to be the world’s second highest motorable pass, with an elevation of 17,582 feet (5,358 metres) according to the sign. That honour now belongs to Khardung La, the world’s previously highest motorable pass.

Pangong Tso

Pangong Tso translates to high grassland lake in Tibetan. It’s a beautiful, endorheic lake in the Himalayas, at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft). The Tibetan Autonomous Region of China is located across this deep azure lake. Despite being saline, the lake water freezes completely during the winter. Pangong Tso is a five-hour drive from Leh, with the majority of the journey taking place on winding mountain roads.

Gurudwara Patthar Sahib

It was built in 1517 to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev’s visit to Ladakh and is located 25 km from Leh on the Srinagar-Leh highway. One of the tourist attractions in Ladakh is this rare, picturesque gurudwara. It is known for two large stones, one of which is said to bear Guru Nanak Dev’s imprint and the other, which is said to bear the imprint of a demon he encountered here. Both of these stones are on display in this gallery.

Hall of Fame

The Indian Army built and maintains the Hall of Fame Museum in Leh; the museum honours Indian soldiers, who died in Indo-Pak wars and also commemorates the Army’s role in cloudburst relief in 2010. This is one of the most fascinating places in Leh to visit. You’ll find a lot of information about how our brave soldiers survive in such harsh conditions and extreme places such as the Siachen Glacier section.
