Sankoo Community Health Center leads awareness efforts during World Glaucoma Week

Kargil: In Ladakh, in a concerted effort to combat glaucoma and promote eye health, the Community Health Center in Sankoo spearheaded a series of initiatives during World Glaucoma Week. Collaborating with the Department of Ophthalmology and the District Health Society in Kargil, the center organized awareness programs and screening camps on Saturday, March 16th.
Under the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” the week-long campaign aimed to educate the public about the signs, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Zahida Khatoon, Block Medical Officer at the Community Health Center, played a pivotal role in coordinating these efforts.
One of the highlights of the event was an educational session held at the Jamiya Masjid in Sankoo, where Mohd Raza, an Ophthalmic Assistant, provided valuable insights into the disease. Attendees were urged to prioritize regular eye check-ups to facilitate early detection and intervention, thus mitigating the risk of irreversible vision loss.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Zahida Khatoon emphasized the importance of raising awareness about glaucoma, which remains a leading cause of preventable blindness globally. She underscored the significance of collaborative efforts in tackling this public health challenge and expressed gratitude to all participants for their support.
World Glaucoma Week, an annual global initiative led by the World Glaucoma Association, aims to shed light on the importance of early detection and treatment of glaucoma. Through events like those organized in Sankoo, communities worldwide are empowered to unite in the fight against this sight-threatening condition.
