Kargil: Prominent Ladakhi political activist and former parliamentary candidate Sajjad Kargili has expressed disappointment over the recent letter sent by senior Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the issues of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking to social media, Sajjad Kargili reminded the Congress leadership of their commitment made during Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Leh and Kargil in August 2023, where assurances were publicly given to raise all four core demands of Ladakh – Statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, recruitment and job reservation, and a dedicated Public Service Commission.
However, the letter sent to the PM by the Congress high command only highlighted the Sixth Schedule, omitting the crucial demand for statehood, which has been repeatedly raised by all major stakeholders in Ladakh including the Apex Body Leh and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).
“Ladakh’s leadership has consistently demanded both Statehood and Sixth Schedule,” Sajjad Kargili posted. “The Sixth Schedule alone cannot fulfill Ladakh’s constitutional and democratic aspirations.”
He urged Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge to revisit their position and ensure that any future advocacy on Ladakh’s behalf includes Statehood as a non-negotiable constitutional demand.
