Kargil, June 15: In preparation for the upcoming Muharram observances and to improve traffic management in the town, the Municipal Committee Kargil on Monday carried out a major roadside clearance drive along the Circular Old Hospital Road from Bus Stand to Upper Changchik.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Kargil, Ayas Ahmad (JKAS), in coordination with Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Kargil, Ghulam Mohammad (JKAS).
As part of the drive, accumulated debris, construction waste and other roadside obstructions were removed to facilitate road widening and improve vehicular movement along the important alternate route. The Municipal Committee deployed 15 labourers, two JCB machines and two dumpers to execute the clearance work efficiently.
Officials said the initiative was undertaken in response to the persistent shortage of parking space in Kargil’s Main Bazaar area and the expected rise in traffic volume during Muharram. The widening of the Circular Road is expected to ease congestion, provide an alternative route for commuters and support better traffic regulation during religious processions and gatherings.
ADDC Kargil stated that the administration is committed to ensuring smooth traffic movement and public convenience during Muharram. He noted that similar clearance and road improvement works will be carried out at other identified locations across the town to strengthen urban infrastructure and address traffic-related challenges.
The administration expressed confidence that the road widening measures will significantly improve accessibility, reduce bottlenecks and facilitate safer movement of vehicles during Muharram and other major public events in the district.
