Leh: In a heartening example of wildlife conservation, the Department of Wildlife Protection, UT of Ladakh, successfully rescued and rehabilitated an injured Red Fox found in the Spituk Farka area of Leh.
The incident was first reported on the evening of June 1, 2025, by Mr. Gonbo, a resident of Spituk village, who spotted the fox limping while on his way to work. He promptly informed the Range Office, Leh.
Acting swiftly, Range Officer Phunchok Wangtak and Rescue Incharge Smanla Tsering rushed to the spot and safely captured the injured animal.
The fox was transported to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (WRRC), Leh, where Veterinary Officer Dr. Diskit Yangzom conducted a thorough medical examination.
The assessment revealed a deep wound on its shoulder and forearm—likely caused by barbed wire or a metal chain. The injury, being old, had become infected and infested with maggots.
The animal was also found to be underweight and in a weakened condition.
Under the close supervision of the WRRC team, the fox received daily medical treatment, nutritional feeding, deworming, and health monitoring.
The rehabilitation process spanned over a month, during which the animal regained full strength and made a complete recovery.
Following the successful treatment and recovery, the Red Fox was released back into its natural habitat near Spituk Farka on July 18, 2025, in accordance with all wildlife release protocols.
This rescue underscores the crucial role of quick public reporting, swift departmental response, and dedicated veterinary care in wildlife protection efforts in Ladakh.
