Kargil: In a significant initiative to promote and preserve indigenous culture, the Department of Shina Regional Languages at Government Degree College (GDC) Drass on Monday organized a successful community tour to the village of Kaksar, District Kargil.
The programme was held under the leadership of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal of GDC Drass, who has been a strong advocate for the preservation of Ladakh’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
The community interaction was led by two renowned experts in Shina language and literature – Mr. Mohd Shafi Sagar and Ahsan Ali Bismil – who engaged directly with the people of Kaksar to learn about and document their rich cultural history.
All interactions were conducted in the Shina language, creating an authentic and respectful space for linguistic and cultural exchange.
Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi praised the initiative, stating: “Such meaningful engagements are vital not only for academic growth but also for the protection of our cultural roots. I commend the efforts of the Department of Shina Regional Languages for taking this bold and inspiring step.”
Students and scholars of Shina language and literature also participated in the programme, further enriching the event by conversing with the local community in fluent Shina.
This real-world engagement provided them with a deeper understanding of the village’s heritage while also reinforcing the importance of language preservation in modern education.
The residents of Kaksar welcomed the team with warmth and expressed pride in hosting such a valuable cultural and linguistic exchange.
They applauded the college for initiating the event and acknowledged the efforts of the department in highlighting the significance of Shina heritage.
The entire programme was coordinated by Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Lone, Coordinator of Regional Languages at GDC Drass, whose diligent planning and leadership were instrumental in the success of the event.
