Korzok: In a major step towards preserving the identity and global market value of Ladakh’s famed Pashmina, a Geographical Indication (GI) Awareness and Association Camp was held today at Korzok village in Nyoma subdivision.
Organised by the Sheep Husbandry Department in collaboration with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), Ministry of Textiles, the camp aimed to educate local Pashmina goat breeders about the importance of the GI tag in ensuring authenticity, quality control, and market recognition.
The camp was attended by Executive Councillor Tashi Namgyal Yakzee as chief guest, along with Councillors Karma Namdak (Rupsho) and Thinley Nurboo (Rong), who showed strong support for the initiative.
Experts highlighted how GI registration can improve economic opportunities for breeders and artisans by providing better traceability and access to global markets. Presentations were delivered by Dr. Tsewang Morup (District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Leh), Dr. Mohd Sadiq (Assistant Director PGF, Nyoma), S.S. Shinday (Executive Manager, NHDC), and GI expert Tejas S.J.
The camp was well received and is seen as a step forward in safeguarding Ladakh’s rich Pashmina heritage while empowering local communities.
