Nubra, June 12: Administrative Secretary, Rural Development Department, Nidhi Malik (IAS), conducted an extensive inspection tour of Nubra district on Thursday, reviewing key infrastructure projects, child welfare initiatives and educational facilities as part of the Union Territory Administration’s efforts to strengthen development in remote border areas.
During the visit, the Secretary inspected the strategic link road connecting the main highway to the Shayok River in Diskit and reviewed its physical and financial progress. Accompanied by officials from the Rural Development Department and district administration, she assessed the quality of work, resource utilization and execution challenges in the region’s difficult terrain.
Highlighting the project’s importance, Malik said the road would significantly improve connectivity, facilitate transportation, boost tourism and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region. She directed the concerned agencies to ensure timely completion of the project while maintaining high construction standards. Officials informed that road infrastructure projects in the district are currently around 50 percent complete.
The Secretary also interacted with local residents and community representatives, listening to their concerns and developmental aspirations. She assured them that public welfare and people-centric development would remain a priority of the Administration.
Shifting focus to social infrastructure, Malik visited the Anganwadi Centre and Lamdon School-I in Diskit along with Deputy Commissioner Nubra Mukul Beniwal (IAS) and SDM Diskit Jigmet Raftan (JKAS). At the Anganwadi Centre, she reviewed nutrition services, attendance, learning activities and hygiene standards.
During the inspection, it was observed that two Anganwadi centres were functioning from a single location. The Secretary sought a detailed report on similar cases across the district and also requested a report regarding the non-functional status of the Palna Scheme at the Diskit Anganwadi Centre.
Emphasizing the importance of early childhood care and development, Malik directed officials to ensure quality nutrition, proper hygiene and effective service delivery under government welfare schemes.
The Secretary also inspected public libraries being constructed by the Rural Development Department in Nubra. The projects, expected to be inaugurated shortly by the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, have achieved nearly 80 percent completion, with remaining works and furniture installation expected to be completed soon.
Calling education and child welfare key pillars of sustainable development, Malik stressed the need for stronger institutional support for children and youth. She also directed all departments to improve coordination, strengthen grassroots implementation and ensure timely delivery of government schemes and services.
The visit reflected the Administration’s integrated approach towards infrastructure development, public welfare and human development, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive growth and improved service delivery across the strategically important border district of Nubra.
