, a historic sporting milestone unfolded in Ladakh today with the inauguration of the North-Zone / All India Inter-University Kabaddi (Women’s) Championship 2025 at the Ice Hockey Rink, Biamathang Kargil. The event is being hosted by the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus under the banner of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and supported by the District Administration Kargil.

The event is being hosted by the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus under the banner of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and supported by the District Administration Kargil.The championship was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh and Chancellor, University of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, who warmly welcomed teams from 48 Universities of the North Zone.
In his address, the Hon’ble LG said that hosting such a prestigious national-level championship in Kargil marks a new beginning in the sports history of Ladakh. He noted that although the University of Ladakh is the youngest university in India, it has shown remarkable progress and excellence in academics and sports. He assured his full support for the development of education and sports infrastructure to make Ladakh a leading region in these sectors.
The Hon’ble LG also presented an Appreciation Certificate to Shri Javed Skarchen for his contribution to Team India and his selection as Coach of the National Kabaddi Team, bringing pride to Ladakh.
Speaking to the media, MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan said that hosting such events not only nurtures and showcases local talent but also boosts tourism and related economic activities in the region, contributing to the overall development of Ladakh.
The ceremony also featured colourful cultural performances by students, celebrating Ladakh’s cultural vibrancy. A Tournament Oath was administered to the participating players, pledging fairness, unity, and sportsmanship.
Among those present were Chairman/CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, Vice Chancellor UoL Prof. (Dr.) Saket Kushwaha, DC Kargil Rakesh Kumar, SSP Kargil Shree Ram R, Joint Director YSS UT Ladakh Tohir Hussain Zubdavi, Registrar UoL, Deans, Principals, sports officers, and a large gathering of students and sports enthusiasts.
