Leh: In a moment marked by celebration, Ladakh today welcomed its newly appointed Lieutenant Governor, Kavinder Gupta, with a grand reception at the Leh Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport.
The atmosphere was filled with warmth and enthusiasm as BJP leaders, supporters, and well-wishers gathered to receive him, setting the tone for a new chapter in Ladakh’s governance.
The reception was led by Tashi Gyaltson Khachu, BJP State President of UT Ladakh, and attended by senior BJP leaders, executive members, district presidents, and members of the BJP Yuva Morcha and Mahila Morcha. Traditional khataks were offered in a show of respect and cultural pride, reflecting the deep-rooted traditions of Ladakh. Supporters expressed hope and excitement as they extended their congratulations to the new LG and pledged their support for his leadership.
Gupta’s arrival marks a significant moment in the political evolution of the Union Territory. His swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, July 18, 2025, at 10:30 AM, where he will formally assume office as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
Ahead of his oath-taking, Kavinder Gupta delivered a clear and heartfelt message to the people of Ladakh, stating that his tenure will be defined by accessibility, accountability, and action.
He emphasized that he is not coming to rule from above, but to work hand in hand with the people. “I’m coming to Ladakh to work with you, not above you. I will be available, I will be accessible, and I will listen,” he said.
Addressing the long-standing demands and concerns of the region, Gupta acknowledged the sensitivities surrounding issues like statehood, Sixth Schedule, and equitable development. He stated that he is fully aware of the internal and external dimensions of Ladakh’s situation, including the concerns of discrimination expressed by some communities. “As LG, my role is to listen, learn, and act in the best interest of every community—be it Buddhist, Muslim, or others.”
Gupta also underlined his commitment to the development of Ladakh’s remote areas such as Nubra, Zanskar, and Drass. He pointed out that while the Centre has made substantial efforts post-2019, significant gaps remain in areas like connectivity, communication, public services, education, and healthcare. Recalling the Zojila Tunnel foundation-laying event he had attended with the Prime Minister in 2018, he vowed that its completion will be among his top priorities.
On the current protest movements and constitutional safeguard demands, Gupta took a balanced approach, stating that he is not here as a political figure but as a facilitator between the people of Ladakh and the Union Government. He promised to engage actively with all stakeholders—former MLAs, Hill Council members, religious heads, and civil society—to build consensus and ensure inclusive governance.
He further expressed support for stronger local governance, stating that just as the Panchayati Raj was implemented in Jammu & Kashmir and DDCs were empowered, similar steps should be taken in Ladakh to bring governance closer to the grassroots.
Gupta also touched upon the challenges of fragile internet infrastructure and limited access to educational and health facilities, particularly in rural areas. He assured that improving these sectors will be central to his mission and reiterated his belief that no resident should have to leave their home for basic services.
Concluding his message, Kavinder Gupta reiterated his intention to lead with humility and cooperation, offering his full commitment to the people of Ladakh. His formal swearing-in on Friday is expected to mark the beginning of an important new era in the region’s administrative journey.
